The essentials
MiCA, ESMA and national authorities in plain language
01
What is MiCA (MiCAR)?
MiCAR, commonly shortened to MiCA, is the European Union’s legal framework for crypto-assets and the services built around them. It sets common rules for issuers, crypto-asset service providers, and the protection of users and investors across the EU.
The regulation gives market participants a common regulatory vocabulary and a way to check who is reported as authorised.
02
What is ESMA?
ESMA is the European Securities and Markets Authority. It coordinates supervisory activity across the EU and publishes the interim MiCA register used as the primary source for this tracker.
The tracker presents that public register in a searchable format, while the official ESMA record remains the source to use for formal verification.
Each EU member state designates one or more National Competent Authorities to carry out the supervisory duties assigned by MiCAR.
NCAs report authorisations, services, and relevant compliance information to ESMA. That is why every CASP profile identifies the competent authority and country that reported the record.
